Voltron: Strike Force

About

Dreamworks, through Unity, held a competition for teams to develop and pitch a game idea based on their movie and show IP’s, being a fan of the ‘Voltron – Legendary Defender’ series I developed an idea, created the Game Design Document, filmed the required pitch document and started building a small team.

I saw an opportunity to use one of the many game mechanics and systems I’ve mulled over and developed over the years to this idea. The idea is bring some cinematic elements into the gameplay simply by using over the shoulder camera that focuses on the player characters target whilst keeping them in a third of the frame. Further pushing the idea to have the camera track ahead of the character when they are not targeting anything and use the angle to the ground to control the cameras angle in relation to the character means at the base of mountains the camera will pan up highlighting the incline or be overhead of the character near cliff edges to enforce the height of the drop. The same theory would also apply when the player faces off against a boss or larger enemy.

My idea was aimed mainly at the console market primarily Xbox One, but I also ensured I had a control system that could work well on PC with minimal disruption to the intended gameplay.

Control System for Xbox One and PC combined to keep within page limits of the competition

The idea was not selected to move forward in the competition but I’m proud of the overall design and would love to pursue it further in the future. The Game Design Document available for download above is a lot shorter than I would have committed but competition had some page count stipulations.
